Routines are very important for children, particular preschoolers. Changes in these routines can be stressful for young children. One way you can help your child adjust to staying at home right now is to set up a daily schedule or routine.
First, consider what activities you want to include in your child’s routine. Be sure to provide your child with some time for free play. This is important for preschoolers so that your child can learn to entertain himself, plan and pursue a variety of activities, and stay engaged in a task over a period of time. It is okay for your child to be bored sometimes. This will allow your child to feel comfortable with that feeling. Some activities you might want to consider including: school work, outside play, free play, creative time, educational experiences with technology, chores, family time, devotion, story time, or cooking. I will put together a few sample schedules for you to consider. Pick and choose what works best for you and your family. Sample Schedule 1: 8:00 Wake Up 8:30 Breakfast 9:00 Get Ready 9:30 Devotion (could use Pastor Jud's daily video devotions) 9:45 School Work 10:15 Free Play 12:00 Lunch 12:30 Creative Time 1:00 Educational Experiences with Technology (videos, games, etc.) 2:00 Outside Play 3:00 School Work 3:30 Free Play 5:30 Chores 6:00 Dinner 6:30 Family Time 7:30 Story Time 8:00 Get Ready for Bed Sample Schedule 2: 7:00 Wake Up 7:30 Breakfast 8:00 Get Ready 8:30 Devotion 8:45 Creative Time 9:30 School Work 10:00 Free Play 12:00 Lunch 12:30 Chores 1:00 Outside Play 2:00 Educational Experiences with Technology 3:00 School Work 3:30 Free Play 5:30 Story Time 6:00 Dinner 6:30 Family Time 7:30 Get Ready for Bed Again, choose what schedule works best for you and your family. It does not need to be exactly like mine. You can even type it up or write it on a piece of paper to hang up in your house for your child to see. That way, your child knows what to expect. Do your best to follow the schedule throughout the day. This will help your child to feel more secure throughout all of these changes. If you’d like, you can even share a picture of your schedule on seesaw! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Blessings, Ms. Barker
